Ambassador Program

The Prize

Up to 16 NL students will participate in the trip of a lifetime. They’ll head to France and Belgium to participate in a First World War battlefield tour, visiting significant sites where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought. And they’ll follow the Trail or the Caribou, spending time in the five communities that are home to the bronze caribou monuments. And finally, they’ll spend a day in Brussels visiting a selection of the city’s historical and cultural landmarks.

The Challenge

During the First World War, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians served on the land, sea, and in the air. Some defended the Homefront, many more fought on the frontlines. Some volunteered overseas, serving as doctors, nurses, sailors and loggers. Others volunteered at home, knitting and sewing warm clothes for troops, preparing medical supplies for the Red Cross, and raising funds for everything from hospital beds to financial support for soldiers’ families.

Tell us about someone who contributed to Newfoundland and Labrador’s efforts in the First World War.

You can choose a relative, but we’ll give you bonus points for doing some digging into the past and discovering someone new-to-you.

Next, answer the following questions:

  • Who were they?

  • How did they contribute to the war effort?

  • What do you find interesting or inspirational about their contribution?

  • Where does your information come from? What sources did you use?

Then, share your answers with us. Write an essay, poem or song. Create a video, podcast or slideshow. The choice is yours, but remember …. your submission must include your answers to all four questions.
