CONTEST ENTRY IS NOW OPEN! 〰️
2026 Trail of the Caribou Pilgrimage
The Prize
The opportunity to participate in the trip of a lifetime. You’ll head to Beaumont Hamel, France for the annual July 1st memorial ceremony. You’ll also participate in a First World War battlefield tour of Northern France and Belgium, visiting significant sites where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought. AND you’ll spend time in the five communities that are home to the Newfoundland Regiment’s bronze caribou monuments.
The Challenge
Pick one way the First World War is remembered.
From all of the death and destruction …. and grief …. from the First World War, came a shared need to remember what was lost. In official and unofficial ways, individually or as groups, in public and private spaces, on a local, national and international scale, ways to remember the enormous cost of the First World War were created.
Start looking and you’ll discover these acts of remembrance are all around us. There are public monuments and preserved landscapes, places named in honour, symbolic gestures and traditions, stories, pomes and songs, works of art, films and plays, even video games!
Once you’ve picked one way the First World War is remembered, we want you to answer the following questions:
-Why did you choose it?
-Who or what is being remembered?
-What message do you take away from it …. and why?
You can use any medium you like. Maybe that’s a short video, or an essay, an original song, or a piece of visual art. The sky’s the limit, but remember:Your story must be about one act of remembrance. It must be true (so let us know where you found your information).
