Projects that promote and preserve the history of Newfoundland and Labrador

Ongoing:

1997 to present

Provides funding, sponsorship, and support for the Heritage Fairs, across Newfoundland and Labrador

1993 to present

Restored, operates, and maintains Hawthorne Cottage, the former home of famous navigator and arctic explorer Captain Robert Abram Bartlett. The cottage is a National Historic Site of Canada.

1993 to present

Holds the annual Manning Awards for Excellence in the Public Presentation Historic Places which celebrates the work of individuals, and communities in preserving and presenting this province’s history and heritage

2003 to present

Annually awards the Paul O’Neill Scholarship to a undergraduate student at Memorial University of Newfoundland

2000 to present

Provides annual financial support for the Signal Hill Tattoo.

Owns and periodically displays the Newfoundland – A Place Called Home Exhibition at 309 Water Street, St. John’s, above the Heritage Shop.

Annually organizes and hosts the Bartlett Lecture in Brigus. The Bartlett Lecture explores the life and times of Captain Robert Bartlett, renowned explorer and adventurer.

2010

Held the Viking Luncheon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discover of L’anse Aux Meadows

2005-2010

Provided support for the new exhibition in the Visitor Centre at Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.
Celebrating Bartlett 2009 – A year of province-wide activities celebrating the amazing arctic career of Captain Bob Bartlett and commemorating his role in the “dash to the Pole” with Admiral Robert Peary in 1909.

2004

Completed the funding and development of four vignettes for the Live on the Lawn Theatre Series with the Baccalieu Players at Hawthorne Cottage, Brigus

2002

Translation of the Red Bay underwater archaeological report

2000

Organized a 10-day Viking Millennium International Symposium, which attracted over 300 historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts from around the world. The conference started in St. John’s, moved to L’Anse aux Meadows, over to the Labrador Straits, and ended in Corner Brook.

1998

Provided funding for interpretive signage for Port au Choix National Historic Site of Canada, as well as publishing the book Ancient Cultures Bountiful Seas: the Story of Port au Choix by Dr. Priscilla Renouf.

1998

Provided support for the conservation and restoration of the Cape Spear Lighthouse Dome, Cape Spear National Historic Site of Canada.

1992

Restored the interior of Cabot Tower, Signal Hill, St. John’s, NL.

1985

Worked with 12 artists across Canada to produce the Canadian Art Print Portfolio, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Parks. The project raised funds to support the Signal Hill Tattoo.

1983

Financially assisted with the reconstruction of the Queen’s Battery Barracks at Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada.

1983

Commissioned internationally renowned artist David Blackwood to create a limited edition etching of Cape Spear. One was presented to Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their visit to Newfoundland, and the profits from the sale of the rest of the edition were used to support the Signal Hill Tattoo.
