Newfoundland Coins:
Prior to becoming the 10th province of Canada, Newfoundland was a self-governing British Colony from 1855-1907 and a British Dominion from 1907-1949. As a dominion under the commonwealth, Newfoundland had its own currency. The first Newfoundland coins were introduced in 1865, with 1, 5, 10 and 20 cent pieces being issued. The $2 piece was issued later that year, followed by the 50 cent coin in 1870. The last Newfoundland coins were struck in 1947, just over a year before Newfoundland joined Canada as the 10th province and adopted Canadian currency.
