Marble:
The marble used in this piece comes from a unique rock type found in Western Newfoundland, known as Precambrian Marble. his marble was originally formed from the accumulation of Stromatlites (an organism) and lime mud in warm shallow ocean conditions more than 600 million years ago. Later, it was buried and underwent intense heat and pressure to become crystalline. This marble, which is sculpture quality, represents some of the oldest rocks in Western Newfoundland.

Artist Biography:
Working as a geologist in northern Canadian locations, Nathaniel Noel has had a unique opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat. Today, he uses those first-hand observations as a basis for the stone sculptures he creates in his studio of Lawrence Pond, Upper Gullies, Newfoundland.

Noel has been carving for more than twenty years. Over time he has developed a distinctive and very personal approach to his subject matter and to the material in which he works. Noel's work is found in many collections throughout the world including those of Nelson Mandela, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and Her Royal Highness Princess Ann.
